UNSUBSCRIBE FROM ALL DISTRACTIONS – BE RUTHLESS
Given we are bombarded with so much stimulation – much of it we haven’t really opted into, but absorb anyway – this week try to unsubscribe from all distractions, however minute they may seem. A beep of a text alert, the buzz of a WhatsApp chat, constant emails which aren’t of any importance and value will punctuate your day hundreds of times. In the effort of the pursuit of more pleasure and less stress, start by unsubscribing to as many emails as you can. Every time you get an email that disturbs your day, unsubscribe from the site. Make a phone call if you know it will save 20 emails back and forth, and avoid getting into the ‘Reply All’ habit as it’s a huge time drain. Unfollow people that make you feel crap about yourself or have values you don’t believe in, even if you’re curious. Keep your phone on silent and designate certain times to checking it – you’ll find that life is a lot calmer if you’re not checking your phone every 20 minutes. I find setting time aside in the mornings and afternoons to batch emails and return calls allows me chunks of time during the day to focus undistracted. You’ll have a greater sense of achievement at the end of each day – calming down that cortisol. If you’re totally addicted to your phone, be utterly ruthless about it and physically turn it off when you’re trying to tackle a task.
Last but not least, practise switching off your phone or whacking it in a drawer from the moment you get home for a minimum of two hours. You’ll find you relax much more deeply and create mental space to be present with friends, family and meal times. If you can keep this habit going – even if it’s just a few nights a week or a half day at the weekend – you’ll find that everything quietens down. Within that media stillness, you find so much more delight in the simple pleasures of your day-to-day life.
